saltwater flies?

Postby Inconnu on Thu Aug 14, 2008 11:38 am

I don't get a chance to do much saltwater fishing where I am, but I have tied a few flies on request for friends. I do get out to the Pacific Coast off Vancouver Island each summer but I don't get much chance to sneak away with a flyrod.
I tied these for a friend who fishes on the east coast.

The second fly was supposed to be a baitfish. The squid actually was meant for night fishing or low light as it is pretty much all glow-in-the-dark. Thanks for looking....Kerry

Thanks for sharing. That is a hobby I would love to learn someday. Both the fly tying and the fly fishing. To be able to tie your own fly and catch fish on it just sounds like a rewarding experience.

It is pretty rewarding 79ford, it is cool to fool a fish with something you have tied and possibly created yourself. I also build my own rods so it is a double whammy. It really doesn;t matter where you fish you can probably flyfish for something. Hope you give it a try sometime....Kerry

as one who has never fly fished, let alone tried salt water fly fishing, does one use a steel leader for salt water? I was thinking for something like blue fish, you would likely need a steel leader if you didn't want your line broken. anyone?

We use steel leaders on Pike in the freshwater and I would think that with Blues being the toothy critters they are you would do the same. There are several ways to hook up wire on a flyrod, check it out at the local tackle shop if you can or maybe check youtube as well. :)
