Which vise do you use and why?

Postby Inconnu on Thu Aug 14, 2008 11:33 am

I always like to see what other folks are using as tying tools. My vise is a Vosseler, takes two different heads and has a basic rotary function that suits my purposes. I like the suction cup base that allows me to use it on most flat surfaces without scarring.
What do you folks use?

Have three different vices. One being a portable one which screws into the base which is an opened box (got from Cabela's). the other two are one I built (just like a nor-vise) and a no-name. Some people will say I'm wrong but the vice isn'r really that much different from one to the other. sure quality does differ but it's just a vice. i'm a certified Toolmaker so I can say this with a bit of reason. Why pay $300+ when a $40 holds the hook just as well?

I have 10 thumbs when it comes to building or making things, so I am always a little envious of people with that talent. Do you have a picture of the vise you built?
I hold no judgement on people and the apparent value of their equipment. If a $40 vise is what works for you then that is all that is important. $400 vises do not make anyone a better tyer.

I have a Renzetti Traveler vise. I like it because of the quality, portability and it's full rotary. I'm a guest tier at several conclaves and expos and it fits the bill for me.

They are probably the most popular vise of all. I think Renzetti was trying to get the shape of their vise patented or copyrighted because so many commercial sites were using just the graphic shape and there were some knock-offs coming out with the same shape and claiming to be "Renzetti-like."

Renzetti Traveler Vise I like it because it is full rotary and can be use for salt & fresh water without changeing heads. PS just starting to try. :)

The nice thing about the Renzetti vise is... if you damage the jaws they can be replaced. No need to purchase another vise.

I use the Anvil.

Because it's stronger than vise grips and can hold any size fly.

I use a Regal. It's been a great vice and has served me very well. I tie a little over 300 dozen flies a year, and it has stood up to the pressure. Before my Regal, I used a Danvise which also served me well.

I have an HMH Standard that I bought in 1980. I was "sold" on it in a fly shop from a gentleman who worked there named AK Best, who is know famous for his flies, books, tying techniques, and friendship with John Gierach. Its now 2008, and it still works like new. Original jaws, original parts. AK said it would be the last vice I ever bought, and he was right!
