Regulations: 4 trout limit, general state-wide rules

Description: This medium size stream has an abundant population of wild brown trout and good access from the paved road that runs parallel to the stream. The upper section runs through a deep canyon that gives the adventurous angler an opportunity to get further away from the easier access areas. Also, the stream splits into numerous tributary streams that contain wild trout, some of which are remote and more difficult to fish. Rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout are more common in the headwater areas and tributary streams. Because of the abundance of wild trout, stocking of hatchery rainbows in the river has been largely discontinued. These fish are now stocked into nearby lakes and reservoirs, including Little Reservoir, Three Creeks Reservoir, the Kents lakes, Anderson Meadow Reservoir, and LaBaron Reservoir. Some stocking in the river has occasionally taken place near the campground and picnic area. Most trout in the river and tributaries are under 14 inches. Brown trout are most effectively taken with flies, small lures, and natural baits, such as worms and grasshoppers. Prepared baits and salmon eggs are generally not the best options for wild brown trout. Some of the tributary streams include Merchant Creek, Three Creeks, the East Fork, and South Fork.
